MANSFIELD, LA. (AP) - A 29-year-old man accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend and her unborn child has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder.
In exchange for Monday's plea, Lee Arthur Allen escaped the possibility of a death sentence at trial and instead was sentenced to life in prison without parole, probation or suspension of sentence.
Allen has been jailed since his arrest in the November 2007 shooting death of 24-year-old Kawanna Thomas of Shreveport and her unborn daughter, who was about two weeks from delivery. DNA tests
later confirmed the child was Allen's.
Thomas was shot at least seven times - with two bullets striking the unborn child - and left alongside a rural road in south DeSoto Parish near the borders of Sabine and Natchitoches parishes. The
murder happened after Thomas, Allen and his new girlfriend, Willa Kelly, argued.
A charge of first-degree murder is pending against 27-year-old Kelly of Many.
Kelly led authorities to Thomas' body after Allen confessed.
