Bossier City, La - The Bossier-Shreveport BattleWings claimed their second consecutive Southwest Division title after beating the Arkansas Twisters 64-50 in front of 5,612 fans at the CenturyTel Center on Saturday night. Wings' WR Manwell Talbert opened the scoring with a 8 yard touchdown strike from QB Andrico Hines to give the Wings' a 7-0 lead. Talbert opened the 2nd quarter with another touchdown (10 yards) from Hines to give the BattleWings a 14-7 lead. Buchie Ibeh got into the action with a 4 yard touchdown catch after a Twister turnover to push the Wings' lead to 21-7 with 5:04 remaining in the 1st half. Twisters' KR Cameron Kinerd answered Ibeh's touchdown with a 57 yard kickoff return for a touchdown to cut the Wings' lead to 21-14 before Wings' FB Jason Schule broke off a 30 yard touchdown scamper to break the all-time af2 rushing record. Schule needed 38 yards to break Sherard Poteete's career rushing record coming into the game and only needed two more touchdown rushes to tie the single season rushing touchdown record (28). Another Twister turnover allowed Buchie Ibeh to get in the endzone again for the BattleWings to extend the Wings' lead to 35-14 with 15 seconds remaining in the 1st half. BattleWings' fans were ecstatic with what they thought would be a 21 point lead going into halftime, but Twisters' WR Aaron Fairouz made a spectacular leaping catch to haul in a 23 yard touchdown pass as time expired in the 1st half.
Aaron Fairouz struck again early in the 3rd quarter with a 26 yard touchdown reception to make it a 35-28 Wings' lead, but FB Jason Schule dove in the endzone from 2 yards out two minutes later to push the Wings' lead back to 14 (42-28). Schule again found the endzone early in the 4th quarter to tie the single season rushing touchdown record and give the BattleWings a seemingly comfortable 49-34 lead, but the Twisters would not go away quietly. The Twisters sandwiched a 4 yard touchdown reception by Buchie Ibeh with a 2 yard Kyle Rowley rushing score and a touchdown reception by Xavier Lee to make it a 56-48 BattleWings lead. The BattleWings' offense was stymied by the Twisters on the next offensive possession and the Wings' had to settle for a 31 yard FG attempt by K Art Carmody. Carmody's kick was blocked and returned 34 yards for a safety and the Twisters pulled to within 6 points of the Wings' with 2:11 left in the game. The Twisters could not capitalize on their late chances as Marvin Byrdsong picked off Kyle Rowley pass which was converted into Manwell Talbert's third receiving touchdown of the night. Moments later, DB Phillip Geiggar sealed the victory with his second interception of the night.
The BattleWings will host Southwest Division rival Rio Grande Valley next week at the CenturyTel Center in the first round of the 2009 af2 playoffs. For ticket information, call 318-746-8755.
