The Biologic drug Enbrel has profoundly changed the way doctors are able to treat patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
"What we saw almost immediately was a reduction in fatigue, an increase in energy, reduction very quickly in these painful joints and swollen joints and all the disability measures that we looked at dramatically improved. In the bottom line, you could see with your own eyes how much more functional they were. Just the expression on their face when they would come in the office was like looking at a new person."
Doctor Michael Franklin says Enbrel has been shown to begin working in as few as 2 weeks with most people receiving maximum benefit within 3 months.
"Once I began to use Enbrel, it really gave me my life back. I could play ball with my kids and throw a frisbee. I could pick up my daughter. I could do the hobbies that i used to do before i developed rheumatoid arthritis."
"It got so bad that one Christmas I wrote a letter to Santa. And out of anything I could have picked anything in the world - any toy, anything, money, anything - I said please make me normal."
Doctor Franklin says medical studies show , 2 out of 3 adults with rheumatoid arthritis, 3 out of 4 children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, and about 50% of patients with psoriatic arthritis responded well to Enbrel.
