  • Bipolar disorder, formerly known as manic depression, is a mood disorder that causes extreme fluctuations in mood.  It is called bipolar disorder because mood states can alternate between the "poles" of depression (sad or empty mood) and mania (high, elevated or irritable mood).
  • Depression is a mood disorder characterized by sad or empty mood and/or loss of interest in work and pleasurable activities.  Other symptoms may include feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, worthlessness, suicidal thoughts, sleep disturbance, appetite changes, decreased concentration and lack of energy.
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is characterized by at least 6 months of chronic unrealistic worry and anxiety.  The worry may involve many different aspects of life and interferes with daily functioning.   Excessive thinking and dwelling on the "what ifs" are the hallmarks of this disorder.
  • Insomnia is repeated difficulty with initiation, maintenance, duration or quality of sleep.   It may take individuals at least 30 minutes or more to fall asleep and they may get six or fewer hours of sleep on most nights.  People may awaken several times during the night or experience a restless sleep; therefore, they feel unrested in the morning or experience excessive daytime sleepiness. 
  • Nicotine dependence, also known as tobacco dependence, is an addiction to tobacco products caused by the drug nicotine.  Dependence can develop with all forms of tobacco products such as cigarettes, chewing tobacco, snuff, pipes and cigars.
