Mind of a Rapist

An Ark-La-Tex teenager, accused of being a serial rapist, is leading some to ask, 'what drives people to commit rape?'  During a candid conversation with longtime Caddo Assistant District Attorney Hugo Holland, he shared some chilling insights into the mind of a rapist.
16 year-old Calvin "C.J." Breakfield is already accused of the brutal rape and robbery of an 81-year-old Shreveport woman this past weekend.  Now, police tell us there's compelling evidence linking the teenager to a separate rape two years ago, ironically also involving an 81-year old Shreveport woman.
"This is probably one of the most vicious rapes that I've handled in 18-years of prosecuting," said Holland, referring to the most recent rape.  He described Breakfield as an "anger excitation" or 'sadistic' rapist.  "Very small percentage of rapists that actually inflict pain for the sake of inflicting pain.  And this appears to be one of those cases."
Holland elaborated on the chilling profile of a sadistic rapist.  "This is the way this guy (a rapist) is wired.  This is the way that he gets off, and nothing's going to change that."
Holland also described his gut feeling about the person who brutally attacked the 81-year old Shreveport woman.  "This person has done this before and if they get out, if, it'll happen again."
That was exactly the conclusion Shreveport Police announced during a news conference Thursday afternoon on new arrests in cold cases.  They credited the work of SPD Crime Scene Investigator Amy Muller.  Detective Kelly Silva, SPD's Sex Crimes Supervisor added, "she (Muller) did a wonderful job linking "C.J." Breakfield to a 2005 case that took place on Jewella."
Holland said Breakfield would face a mandatory life sentence if convicted of aggravated rape, not the death penalty, as widely reported.  First, that's because the victim is not under 14 and second because of Breakfield's age.  "We still couldn't seek a death penalty on him because the U.S. Supreme Court has said you can't put somebody on death row for something they did when they were under 18," explained Holland.
Breakfield is now locked-up in the Caddo Juvenile Justice System, awaiting a hearing on whether to transfer him to adult court.  Holland predicted that hearing will take place no later than next week.  Then, he'll take the case to the grand jury in June.
