Texarkana Amtrak station may close, though service would continue

Posted: Updated:

TEXARKANA, AR (KSLA) - An Amtrak station in Texarkana that's been in the area for over 20 years may shut down for good.

Arkansas State Representative Steve Herrelson says the sole employee of the Texarkana Amtrak station will be retiring later this month, and Amtrak has not made any plans to replace the employee.

However, negotiations have been going on between Harrelson and Amtrak officials to consider leaving that position open.

"We here in Texarkana value their service," Harrelson said. "Texarkana was built on the railroad. So long as they understand that staffing is needed here in Texarkana and people are increasing numbers riding the train, then hopefully they will see the light and continue staffing at the Texarkana station."

If the Texarkana Amtrak station is not staffed, people will no longer be able to purchase train tickets in Texarkana. They would have to purchase those tickets online.
