SHELBY COUNTY, TX (KSLA) - A controversial practice is being investigated in Shelby County, Texas, and some residents are accusing the district attorney's office of being a part of it.
The pending lawsuit claims that motorists of color are being stopped by law enforcement officers and searched for illegal drugs.
The suit also claims that when no drugs are found, the motorists' personal belongings --generally large amounts of cash--are taken.
The person then is asked to sign a waiver forefeiting their belongings in exchange for not having any money laundering charges filed against them.
The civil action suit is being brought against Tenaha Deputy City Marshal Berry Washington, the Tenaha Mayor, Shelby County District Attorney Lynda K. Russell and Shelby County Precinct 4 Constable Randy Whatley.
