SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - Young boys from across Caddo and DeSoto Parish got an opportunity to expand their horizons and get a taste of the outdoors at the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Camp.

The boys at the sheriff's camp are not that far away from home, but many of them are getting the opportunity to experience things they never have before.

Just off Highway 171 in DeSoto Parish, more than 100 boys from Caddo and DeSoto are tucked away at the Garland Scout Ranch. Roderick Perry with the Caddo Sheriff's Office says, "It's to introduce them to scouting and to let them know that the deputies are here to help."

Under the supervision and guidance of Caddo and DeSoto deputies, the boys are spending their nights in tents. During the day they are learning new, adventurous activities. "Arts and crafts, archery, we are teaching them how to swim," said Perry.

Some will walk away with a new skill. "I didn't know how to catch a fish and then I learned how," said camper Willie Blaylock.

Sergeant Perry says many times one week here can make a world of difference. "They change their personality from Sunday to Wednesday."

"Sometimes I can be hardheaded. I just hope this works out for the best," said camper Barron Wallace.

By building their self-confindence and helping them to grow, the sheriff's office hopes to send these boys out on the right path in life.

The Caddo Parish Sheriff's Camp is sponsored by the sheriff's office and Boy Scouts of America. It's a one-week program that takes place every summer in June and is completely free for kids in Caddo and DeSoto Parishes.
