FEMA Trailers In Hope, Arkansas May Soon Be On The Move

Two Arkansans in Congress say nearly 10,000 trailers stored at the Hope Airport by federal emergency officials may soon be on the way to the Gulf Coast to help victims of last year's hurricanes, or given to communities or charities.

U.S. Senator Mark Pryor and Congressman Mike Ross say the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee has accepted Pryor's amendments that could clear the way for the trailers to be moved out. There are 9,933 trailers stored in the southwestern Arkansas town. One change would waive Federal Emergency Management Agency rules prohibiting manufactured homes from being located in flood plains. That one-time fix is only applicable to the manufactured homes built for evacuees of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Also, the bill would give communities or charities access to unused trailers.
