Caddo Parish Public Schools Vision 20/20 meeting

Posted: Updated:

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) – Today Caddo Parish Public Schools held one of many Vision 2020 Strategic Plan meetings, and talked about possibly closing as many as 15 schools.

Caddo Parish Schools worked with the community to draft the plan, and they first introduced it earlier this year.

Tonight the first Vision 2020 meeting was held at Huntington High School.

The administration presented its proposed vision, focusing on facilities and future enrollment. The plan is to "off-line" 15 schools, mostly by combining two to three schools and buildings into one.

"What we want to do now is see how it resonates with the community, so that they can understand and give us feedback, assuming there are no other issues that we're not aware of," said Dr. Gerald Dawkins. "This is strictly a data driven process. Now what happens in these meetings is that we begin to get a real perspective with them on the ground, and that's what we know we need to need to have in order to shape a final working recommendation to the board."

The administration says declining enrollment and costs are their main reasons for this proposal.

They project a savings of $66 million on repairs by combining schools. The total cost is projected at a little more than $700 million.

KSLA News 12 will take a closer look at the schools they are proposing to off-line. Stay with KSLA and as we continue to investigate what this means for your children in Caddo schools.

The public is invited to participate in any the upcoming community meetings to hear about the changes and ask any questions.
