David Melville wins 80% of Democratic votes; will face Fleming

Posted: Updated:

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Methodist minister David Melville has won the Democratic nomination for Louisiana's 4th Congressional District.

With 20 percent of the vote counted in Saturday's Democratic primary, Melville had 80 percent of the vote, compared to 20 percent for Steven Gavi, a retail manager from Bossier City.

Melville, also from Bossier City, is the brother-in-law of former Gov. Buddy Roemer. Melville goes on to challenge first-term Republican U.S. Rep. John Fleming on Nov. 2. Fleming was unopposed for the Republican nomination.

The 4th District represents much of western Louisiana, from the Arkansas line to the Calcasieu Parish line.
