SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) –The 4th of July is supposed to be a time of celebration, but if you're not careful it can also be a dangerous time.

One man's Independence Day celebrations landed him at LSU Hospital after a firework exploded in or near his hand at Cross Lake at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday night.  One witness says the man lost several fingers in the accident.

People can still shoot fireworks in Shreveport from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. on July 5th.

Each year fireworks cause about 9,000 accidents.  To avoid injuries always read the directions carefully.  Also, shoot fireworks off in an open area far enough away from any buildings or trees that could catch fire and keep a hose or fire extinguisher close by. Instead of using a match, it's more safe to light fireworks with a longer lighting stick so your hand doesn't get too close to the firework.
