SHELBY COUNTY, TX (KTRE) – A second person is behind bars, charged with capital murder in the brutal death of his mentally disabled brother.  The arrest of Shelby County Sheriff's narcotics officer, Rex Calhoun, 55, comes less than 24 hours since his wife was taken into custody on the same charge.

Investigators say they worked overnight collecting the evidence necessary to make the case.  They are releasing few specifics about what they found, but they do say evidence discovered Thursday night at Calhoun's house "linked him as an active participate" in the murder of his brother,  Allen Calhoun, 56.

Other evidence suggest remuneration might have been a contributing motive in the Timpson man's death.  Chief investigator Kevin Windham declined to say specifically how remuneration factored into the charge.  He did confirm that investigators had documentation dating back to 2006 to support their case and added, "paper trails don't lie."

Rex Calhoun has been transferred to the Panola County jail.

Lana Calhoun, 50, is married to Rex Calhoun, and she was arrested by the Texas Rangers late Thursday evening on a capital murder charge relating to the death of her brother-in-law, Allen Calhoun, according to the Shelby County District Attorney's office.

Authorities instructed the Shelby County Jail to transfer Lana Calhoun to the Panola County Jail. She was booked in at 10:20 p.m. Thursday.

Authorities said a pathologist determined Allen Calhoun died from homicidal violence, including blunt force trauma. He died Sept. 22, 2009, in his home on the 700 block of Rosehill Road in Timpson.

According to lead investigator Texas Ranger Pete Maskunas, Allen Calhoun died during a severe beating.

A seven-month long investigation led Texas Rangers and other Shelby County law enforcement agencies to make the arrest. It was during their investigation that they discovered Allen Calhoun had been abused over an extended period of time, according to Kevin Windham, chief investigator of the Shelby County D.A.'s office

Windham said Allen Calhoun became mentally disabled after a car accident in 1971. Windham said he lived with his brother, Rex Calhoun, and his sister-in-law, Lana Sue Calhoun.

Windham said the couple had obtained power of attorney over Allen Calhoun in the summer of 2008.

According to Windham, witnesses told authorities they had watched Allen Calhoun rummage through garbage cans searching for food during his brief employment at Wal Mart. 

At 6 p.m. Thursday, investigators were en route to the Calhoun's home in Timpson to conduct a search warrant. Close to a dozen of the Department of Public Safety crime lab technicians documented everything in the Calhoun's home. Around 8 p.m. Thursday, crime lab technicians examined countless photographs taken during Allen Calhoun's autopsy.

The sheriff's office fired Rex Calhoun upon his arrest.
