HOUMA, LA (AP) - Volunteers will help restore, protect and preserve 1 of the state's only forested ridge restoration project this weekend.
On Saturday and Sunday, the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program volunteer team, Port Fourchon officials and students from Union College of Schenectady, N.Y., will help plant 4,500 native wetland plants on the reconstructed ridge.
The ridge is on a rebuilt piece of land made from dredged material meant to mimic long-lost forested lands in the area and protect Port Fourchon from storm surge.
Saturday's efforts will involve taking wetland plants to the site, distributing them along the ridge and prepare planting locations by drilling holes with gas-powered augers. Sunday's activities will include more plant distribution and the planting itself.
