Homeless single S'port mom spreads inspiration

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) –A Shreveport woman spreads good cheer this holiday season although her circumstances may not seem too bright to some.

KSLA News 12 talked with Avon Simmons Friday afternoon, she's a homeless, single Shreveport mom.

Simmons is currently staying at the Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission and she's trying to make a difference in her life and the lives of her children.

Simmons also volunteers at the mission as a cook and even though she doesn't make any money, it's the first job she's ever held.

The former stay-at-home mother of seven says she recently got her GED and her Certified Nursing Assistant certification and is hoping to pursue a career in nursing someday soon.

"I'm hoping to be self-sufficient," said Simmons. "Just be able to take care of the girls and pay the bills, I'm not looking to live in a mansion or hill or nothing," she adds.

Avon will take a test in January 2010 to qualify for Louisiana Tech's License Practical Nursing Program, so one say she can earn a living as a nurse.
