BATON ROUGE, LA (AP) - The state Department of Social Services is working to get child care assistance to help low-income families afford day care on Louisiana military bases.
The agency has announced it plans to create a new child care provider type in the state. The change will allow day care centers licensed by the U.S. Department of Defense and the children who attend them to become eligible for the aid.
So far, one Department of Defense child care center in Louisiana has applied to be registered as the new provider type, a center located at Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City. A DSS official says the agency also is in talks with a day care center at Fort Polk about participating.
