Associated Press - December 4, 2009 7:24 AM ET

HOLDEN, La. (AP) - Officials say a 23-year-old Holden woman died in an apartment fire.

State Fire Marshal Butch Browning said 46-year-old Daniel Hymel told fire officials that he and his girlfriend, Devon Elizabeth Griggs, were asleep in the second-story apartment on La. Highway 1036 when they woke up to smoke.

Browning said Hymel and Griggs tried go down the stairway, but it was blocked by the blaze.

The couple then went to their kitchen window and Hymel jumped to safety.

When deputies arrived around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, officials said Griggs was still inside the apartment.

Browning said her remains were found in the kitchen.

The Advocate reports the cause of the fire is under investigation.
