JASPER, Ark. (AP) - Changes under way in Newton County will move it closer to getting enhanced 911 service.
The northwestern Arkansas county is the last in the state to convert to centerline mapping to get physical addresses to every house and business.
Shelby Johnson, the state geographic information officer, says Newton County is still using the antiquated postal route and box or highway contract route. But those addresses do not correspond with a physical location.
Johnson says the county is working toward having addresses based on specific locations that are sequentially numbered.
Assessor Sheila McCutcheon says the first part of the project costs about $77,000, and it will take another $200,000 before its done. She says the county should have a modern 911 system in about two years.
