S'port detective injured in shootout 'in good spirits'

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA)- A Shreveport detective wounded during a shootout with an armed robbery suspect is in good spirits as he recovers from his wounds.

Shreveport Police Chaplain Pastor Danny Thompson says Shreveport Detective Jack Miller was in good spirits and was smiling during a hospital visit shortly after the shooting. Thompson said Miller, a 14-year veteran of the department, also had his family by his side at LSU Hospital.

Pastor Thompson spent most of his morning with Detective Miller and his family. "He's smiling, Thank God.  He's smiling and resting well.  I asked him how he was feeling, I prayed with him since he was talking and everything."

The shootout sent Miller to the hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg, while the bank robbery suspect invovled in the shootout died from his injuries.

Police Spokesman Bill Goodin said the man, believed to be the suspect who robbed a bank Wednesday morning, was pronounced dead at LSU Hospital. Investigators are working to identify the suspect.

Shreveport Police Chief Henry Whitehorn tells KSLA News 12 that it all began around 8:15 a.m. when a suspect reportedly robbed the Capitol One Bank in the 2300 block of Greenwood Rd. and Interstate 20.

Chief Whitehorn says that the suspect walked into the bank fired a couple of shots and took at least one female customer hostage. The suspect then reportedly left the scene on a motorcycle with a large sum of money.

Shreveport Police Holiday Robbery Task Force later spotted the alleged robbery suspect at Mansfield Rd. and Midway Ave. The detective called for assistance and tried to pull the suspect over. Police say the suspect got off his motorcycle and began shooting at the detective. 

The detective was shot in the upper leg, but was able to return fire and hit the suspect several times in the upper body. A patrol officer responding to the scene also fired shots at the suspect.
