SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) – Lucien Trammell will spend the next 58 years in prison for the attempted murder of a police officer. That's a little bit longer of a sentence than most attempted murder cases see. The reason for his longer sentence is his prior convictions.
"It's humbling to know everything is finally over," said Madjerick just moments after hearing the sentence.
It's a moment officer John Madjerick and his recent bride Krista have been waiting for nearly two years.
"We were expecting the minimum so to hear 58 was kind of a shocker," said Krista.
Madjerick was shot in the face in January of 2008.
Within a few days his attacker, Lucien Trammell was caught in Houston - and later convicted in Caddo Parish.
But Madjerick's ordeal is far from over.
"I've been diagnosed with degenerative disease in my neck now, I don't have any pain for that now but they said in the future it could create problems," said Madjerick.
With only a slight scar on his face, Madjerick returned to the streets a few months after the shooting. He's constantly reminded of his brush with death.
"I just worked a homicide which was unfortunate on Friday, and the suspect was still on scene, so back into it and you take one day at a time and start over," said Madjerick.
Madjerick was in the courtroom for the sentence, and heard Judge Leon Emanuel tell Trammell, "I realize that you are the product of failures of this community."
"I know it can be tough in some parts of the inner city, I've worked a lot of those areas on a daily basis, I know it's hard and a struggle for [those] people but ultimately people are responsible for their own actions.
And now Trammell will answer for those actions with 58 years in prison without probation or parole.
Trammell is already serving a ten year sentence from a federal conviction regarding fire arms. That sentence will be added on to the one he got here of 58 years.
