FBI wants public's help in civil rights killings

Associated Press - November 23, 2009 3:04 AM ET

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The FBI may need your help.

The agency has been investigating civil rights-era killings over the last three years and is now turning to the public to locate relatives of victims.

The FBI is appealing for relatives of the victims to come forward to get a status report or provide any evidence or details about the crimes. Some relatives may learn the FBI's investigation has ended.

FBI civil rights division chief Cynthia Deitle (DEET-uhl) says the unit had 108 cases under investigation. She says agents have conducted an exhaustive search for relatives in 33 of those cases and come up short.

The Civil Rights-Era Cold Case Initiative began in 2006. Several people have been convicted after the dormant cases were reopened.
