ALEXANDER, La. (AP) - Lee Ann Whitt, who has been running the Alexandria Zoo for more than a year, has been named the zoo director.
Whitt's official stewardship of the zoo is beginning on a high note, as a $3.5 million upgrade tying into the city's Specially Planned Activity Redevelopment Corridors project was announced Friday.
SPARC plans call for the area around the zoo to be transformed into what Mayor Jacques Roy calls a "children's and science corridor." It is being designed to take advantage of the recreation, sports and tourism infrastructure already there and add family friendly businesses that will complement them.
Roy said the zoo is the "anchor" of that plan.
