Gas well blowout in DeSoto Parish, evacuations underway

Posted: Updated:

DESOTO PARISH, LA (KSLA) – Authorities have evacuated everyone who lives within a two-mile radius of a gas well head that exploded Wednesday morning.

That explosion killed one worker and injured another.

Several families from the affected area were taken to the Clarion Hotel on E. 70th Street. It's not known how long those families will be out of their homes.

A press release from Chesapeake Energy said the blowout happened during routine well maintenance.

The well, officially named Chesapeake’s Sumner 25H-1 natural gas well, is about three miles east of Grand Cane, Louisiana, off George Hunt Rd. in DeSoto Parish.

Names of the injured and dead employees won’t be released until families have been notified. Chesapeake says both men were employees of a contractor working at the well site.

At last check, Chesapeake crews were at the site and additional well control specialists were on their way to the site.
