LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - The state health department's St. Mary Parish area manager and a former parish manager for the state Office of Family Services are among 14 people accused of food stamp fraud.
A 57-count federal indictment handed up in Lafayette alleges that Barbara Sanders and Teresa Hawkins were involved in certifying people for disaster food stamps after four hurricanes, resulting in theft of more than $50,000.
The defendants include ten former or current Office of Family Service employees. The Department of Social Servivces says the four current employees have been suspended.
Attorneys representing four defendants did not immediately return calls; an attorney for a fifth defendant had no comment. The rest don't have attorneys listed in court records.
