OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - The recession isn't stopping Oklahoma City leaders from continuing to promote the latest in a series of proposals they say will move the city forward.
Oklahoma City residents will vote Dec. 8 on the $777 million Metropolitan Area Projects proposal dubbed MAPS 3. North Little Rock, Ark., Mayor Patrick Henry Hays joined his Oklahoma City counterpart, Mick Cornett, in speaking in favor of the idea during a luncheon on Monday.
The MAPS 3 proposal, which would be funded by the continuation of a 1-cent sales tax, includes a new downtown convention center, a 70-acre park, a downtown streetcar system, bicycle trails, sidewalks, senior centers throughout the city and improvements along the Oklahoma River.
It is the third major MAPS initiative. Local police and fire unions have come out against the proposal.
