BOSSIER CITY, LA (KSLA) – It’s another welcome development in the battle to contain the overflowing Red Chute Bayou : The evacuation watch for subdivisions in and around the Stockwell subdivision in North Bossier has been lifted. The subdivisions also include Carriage Oaks, Carriage Oaks Crossing, Brookhaven, Richmond Cove, Lakeside, Victorian Pointe and Lafayette Park.
KSLA News 12 has confirmed with the Caddo-Bossier Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (CBOHSEP) that notification went out to affected residents Sunday evening around 6:00 PM via the FirstCall network. It’s the same network that was used to alert residents of the evacuation advisory issued on Saturday afternoon, as the Red Chute threatened to breach the Guideline Levee. By that time, Thursday’s torrential rains had swollen the bayou to the point of overtopping the levee in several areas in spite of intensive sandbagging efforts.
The advisory was reduced to a watch on Tuesday, as city workers, firefighters, inmates, soldiers and volunteers scrambled round-the-clock to shore up the earthen levee finally turned the tide and brought the potential for breech down to a manageable level.
Work continues along the levee, however. Incident commander and Bossier City Fire Chief Sammy Halphen has said the response to the issues along the levee brought to a head by the flooding is expected to go on for months. The Dogwood Trail bridge will be closed for at least two weeks. Stockwell Road from Ellington Way to Coy Road also remains closed, to allow for heavy truck traffic going to and from the work site by the bridge.
The evacuation watch for residents in South Bossier, north of Highway 154 to Sligo Road has also been lifted. The evacuation advisory for residents south of Highways 157 and 154 to Loggy Bayou Bridge and west to the Red River remains in place.
