LA DEQ advises residents to recycle oil

Posted: Updated:

BATON ROUGE, LA (KSLA) - The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality's Drinking Water Protection Team is now advising the public on ways of recycling oil.

Officials have learned that used motor oil can pollute Louisiana's soils and waters if it is not disposed of properly.

The public can now 'Be the Solution' and recycle oil.

The team has compiled some guidelines for disposal and lists of where you can take it for proper and safe disposal.

Officials advise that when disposing of oil never dispose of it on the ground, in a ditch, creek, river, lake, in a storm drain or in the garbage because it won't be treated. Don't mix it with anything else like water. Transfer your used motor oil to a clean leak-proof plastic container with a screw on top and tighten it to prevent leaking or spilling. Prior to discarding your used oil filter, punch an air hole in the dome end of the filter and allow oil to drain from the filter.

Used oil can be reused and improper disposal plays a big part in nonpoint source pollution. If all the used oil in the United States were recycled in a single year we would save over one billion gallons.

Be the solution and properly dispose of your used motor oil. If you have any questions call 225-219-3510 for the Drinking Water Protection Team.
