BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Don't feed the deer, and don't ride levees or high ground to see them.
That word comes from the State Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
Biologists say white-tailed deer are concentrated in small, high areas by flooding along central and north Louisiana rivers and backwater systems.
They don't plan to close the hunting season. A news release says it's important to reduce the deer herd to levels that can be sustained in areas where greenery and other forage that deer browse on won't grow back before winter.
They also say that most deer habitat is privately owned, and most hunters and landowners will leave enough deer to ensure healthy herds.
They say the deer don't need extra food, but that people riding toward herds might chase them into the water.
