Associated Press - October 26, 2009 5:34 AM ET

THIBODAUX, La. (AP) - Four Steinway pianos at Nicholls State University are intended for use by Nicholls music students. But school officials say the benefits extend to the entire school.

Nicholls Music Department Director Carol Britt says people in choirs and other activities use the high-quality pianos. And assistant music professor Luciana Soares says the pianos represent a long-term investment and act as a powerful recruiting tool for potential students.

The four pianos cost a combined $250,000, though Britt emphasized that they were bought using foundation money and private donations, not student fees or taxpayer dollars. Soares and Britt say they are working to make sure all of the pianos at Nicholls, including practice pianos, Steinways.
