Red Bull-inspired art on view at Union Station

Associated Press - October 14, 2009 4:15 AM ET

WASHINGTON (AP) - An exhibit on view at Washington's Union Station is turning some heads as dozens of sculptures share a single inspiration - the Red Bull energy drink can.

It's not quite Andy Warhol's soup can as art. Instead, participants in the Red Bull Art of Can competition created and shaped their pieces from recycled materials.

There were 300 entries in the competition, and 56 of them will be on display through Oct. 19.

The winner, Kathryn Beale of Granger, Texas, sculpted a piece she calls "Common Ground." It carries a political theme with a donkey and elephant dressed in red, white and blue drinking from the same can of Red Bull.

Beale wins a trip to the Art Basel modern art exhibition in Switzerland.
