New leaders named for New Orleans public housing

Associated Press - October 10, 2009 5:04 AM ET

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The federal secretary of Housing and Urban Development says New Orleans' public housing will be overseen by a management consultant firm that specializes in turning around public housing agencies.

HANO has a long history of employee scams and thefts, and has been run by HUD since 2002. Last month, a former chief financial officer admitted embezzling more than $900,000 between September 2006 and June 2009.

Secretary Shaun Donovan says that on Oct. 30, Gilmore Kean LLC will begin leading day-to-day operations and assessing current operations.

He says David Gilmore will be the administrative receiver and lead the team, which will report directly to HUD's assistant secretary for public and Indian housing.

He also named a local advisory panel.
