Searcy college says alert-system test a success

Associated Press - October 7, 2009 6:54 PM ET

SEARCY, Ark. (AP) - Harding University says a test of its new emergency notification system has been a success, with the alerts reaching all but 26 of the 5,611 people who were supposed to be notified.

The Searcy school said in a news release Wednesday that the full-scale test was conducted Oct. 2.

The new Everbridge system replaces a campus-generated notification system. The school said it allows college officials to contact students, faculty and staff in the wake of catastrophic events, evacuations or hazardous weather. A pre-recorded emergency message can be distributed with the click of a button, reaching individuals through a phone call, text message or e-mail.

Last Thursday's test was designed to attempt to contact the University's 5,611 people using six different paths up to two times each. Paths included cell, home and office phones, e-mail addresses and text messaging.
