Water project for north-central Ark. gets grant

Associated Press - October 6, 2009 7:44 PM ET

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas members of Congress say a $55 million grant has been awarded to a project to provide safe water for 22,000 residents of north-central Arkansas.

A news release Tuesday said the Ozark Mountain Regional Public Water Authority would get the money from the federal Agriculture Department as part of the federal economic-stimulus program. The release was sent by the offices of Sens. Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor, both D-Ark., and U.S. Rep. Marion Berry, D-Ark.

The release said the project plans to build an intake structure and treatment plant on Bull Shoals Lake and pump the treated water to area residents through pipelines across often-rugged terrain in the region.
