Rules laid down for Elmer's Island, state's newest refuge

Associated Press - October 2, 2009 5:34 AM ET

ELMER'S ISLAND, La. (AP) - No glass bottles, no driving in restricted areas and no overnight stays.

Those are some of the rules the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission has put into place at Elmer's Island, the state's newest wildlife refuge. The shoreline refuge is across Caminada Pass from Grand Isle in Jefferson Parish.

The refuge will be open from sunrise to sunset.

Glass containers are not allowed in the refuge, and the same goes for commercial fishing and hunting. Wildlife officials also plan to restrict the use of vehicles.
