BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - U.S. Rep. Charlie Melancon says a pier for recreational fishermen at Grand Isle was too important to the economy and culture of the island to be lost.
A fire destroyed the historic Caminada Pass wooden bridge and fishing pier. Melancon says rather than current plans to demolish a cement bridge in the same area, the structure should be made into a new fishing spot.
The cement bridge is supposed to be removed once construction is finished on the barrier island's new access bridge.
Melancon, a Democrat whose district covers much of southeast Louisiana, sent a letter to several state and federal officials on Tuesday, suggesting the concrete bridge be converted into a fishing pier.
