State Budget Committee takes up welfare issues

Associated Press - September 25, 2009 4:15 AM ET

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Indiana lawmakers are set to begin a review of efforts by the Family and Social Services administration and IBM Corp. to fix problems with the state's privatized welfare system.

Legislative leaders this summer assigned the matter to the State Budget Committee. That panel takes up the review Friday in West Lafayette.

Armonk, N.Y.-based IBM, Dallas-based Affiliated Computer Services Inc. and their partners have a 10-year, $1.34 billion contract to process food stamps, Medicaid and other welfare benefits for Indiana.

Complaints about dropped benefits, lengthy call hold times and other problems led FSSA Secretary Anne Murphy to give IBM and its partner until the end of this month to turn things around.
