New social studies curriculum set for debate

Associated Press - September 17, 2009 4:15 AM ET

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The State Board of Education is set to start its first hearing on the new social studies curriculum.

The monthslong process will establish classroom standards for Texas teachers for the next decade. The standards include everything from the Great Depression and President Roosevelt's New Deal, to the election of President Obama.

On Thursday, the board will take expert testimony on the initial proposal.

Already, disagreements have simmered over the importance that should be given to civil rights leaders. And they're looking at adding mentions of contemporary conservatives Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh to the required curriculum standards.

The draft proposal won't be final until next May for the 2011-2012 school year.
