Tire maker won't appeal big verdict in Texas case

Associated Press - September 11, 2009 7:25 PM ET

RAYMONDVILLE, Texas (AP) - Michelin North America will not appeal a nearly $12 million verdict by a Rio Grande Valley jury this week in a fatal accident that killed six people and left a 12-year-old boy paralyzed.

A Willacy County jury found that a defective Goodrich tire made by the company caused the New Year's Eve 2006 crash outside Matamoros, Mexico.

Michelin spokesman Lynn Mann said in a statement Friday that the company expresses sympathy to the families who suffered loss and has great respect for the court system. But "in our opinion, the jury ignored a great deal of physical evidence in reaching this conclusion."

Nevertheless, the spokesman said South Carolina-based tire maker said it will not appeal, due to an agreement reached earlier.
