ALLENDALE, Mich. (AP) - Grand Valley State University students will spend the next five summers studying the effects of global warming on plants in the Arctic.
The Allendale, Mich., school says it received a $503,000 National Science Foundation grant for the research. It's part of the federal economic stimulus program.
The research is a collaborative effort with the University of Alaska, University of Texas and Florida International University.
Grand Valley assistant biology professor Robert Hollister says researchers will look at the amount of carbon dioxide released by soils, as well as at how much energy plants absorb and plants' nutrient content.
Hollister says the goal is to forecast the effects of climate change on the Arctic.
