LIBERTY EYLAU, TX (KSLA) -  Residents of Liberty Eylau near the Halliburton plant were hopeful they would be allowed to return to their homes after a large tin building reportedly housing chemicals, caught fire.

Several fire departments converged onto the complex just after 1 o clock Monday to battle the blaze which spewed thick black smoke into the air.

That smoke was cause for concern for fire fighters and residents.
No mandatory evacuations were in place, but residents were warned.

"They're saying the smoke is real low, and it could be toxic," said resident, Cliff Spears.

Fire fighters battled the blaze using water brought in with tanker trucks and managed to keep it from spreading to other buildings, but the building where the fire started had collapsed after just a few hours.

"Thank God nobody was in it but as far as that building goes, it's a total loss," said Randy Bean with the Wake Village Fire Department.

Fire officials and residents believe chemicals were inside the building, but how toxic they were is not yet known.
