Associated Press - August 3, 2009 9:35 PM ET

DENTON, Texas (AP) - A former Denton police detective convicted of killing his wife has been sentenced to 45 years in prison.

A jury found 44-year-old Robert "Bobby" Lozano guilty of murder Friday in the 2002 shooting of his wife Virginia "Viki" Lozano.

The Denton Record-Chronicle reports the state offered no witnesses during Monday's sentencing.

Defense attorney Rick Hagen brought one witness, Frank Lozano, a University of North Texas police officer who asked the jury for leniency.

Prosecutors Cary and Susan Piel asked jurors to consider all the victims that Lozano left.

Lozano had served 16 years on the Denton Police Department.
