Ark. sheriff: Gov. signed extradition for Hanson

Associated Press - July 31, 2009 8:44 PM ET

MOUNTAIN HOME, Ark. (AP) - An extradition warrant for a woman who skipped out on her sentencing on 20 counts of animal cruelty has been signed by Gov. Mike Beebe after the woman was arrested last month in Vermont, Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery.

Tammy Christine Hanson, 42, was arrested July 18 in Sutton, Vt., by Caledonia County Sheriff Michael Bergeron, according to Montgomery.

The sheriff said deputies from his office would travel to Vermont to take custody of Hanson if and when a judge orders her turned over to Arkansas authorities.

Hanson was convicted in January 2006 and was allowed to remain free until a scheduled sentencing on Feb. 23, when she didn't show up.

Baxter County authorities said in 2006 that hundreds of dogs, some rescued from Hurricane Katrina, were found on the couple's property. Deputies said the animals had sores, were living in cramped cages, and were groveling for food.
