Hot Springs, Ark., man moves from autos to Avon

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) - When they want more face cream or lipstick, some Avon customers in Arkansas won't call their friendly Avon lady -- instead they'll be calling Boyd Glenn. Call him an Avon gentleman from Hot Springs.

Glenn sold automobile equipment in Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi for 35 years, but he says that business slowed down so much he couldn't even make enough to cover his travel costs. So he looked for something else because he didn't want to retire yet.

Boyd says his new career gives him the opportunity to continue working on his own, to still be self-motivated.

That motivation could be lucrative. Avon representative Lois Ferguson, who is helping Glenn learn the business, says a realtively small proportion of the Avon sales force is male -- only four out of about 350 in the local district. But she said that, when she goes to the national convention, the top salespeople are often men.
