GALVESTON, Texas (AP) - Investigators blame welders for a fire that destroyed at least 60 units of a Hurricane Ike-damaged waterfront condo development on Galveston's Seawall Boulevard.
One firefighter suffered heat exhaustion during the three-hour battle against the fire that broke out in the middle of yesterday afternoon. Flames spread from a corner of the complex to dozens of the other 164 units. Thirty to 40 people were routed from their homes, but no one staying at the Maravilla Condos was injured.
The development has been undergoing renovation and repair of damage from September's hurricane. Local residents said renovations were about a month from completion.
