No charges in UCA hazing

Associated Press - May 23, 2009 8:24 PM ET

CONWAY, Ark. (AP) - No charges will be filed over a hazing incident that led to the suspension of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity chapter at the University of Central Arkansas.

UCA police spokeswoman Lieutenant Rhonda Swindle says the victims don't want to pursue charges. Swindle says prosecutors can't win a conviction without testimony from the victims.

The university says the students involved still could face discipline.

Last month, UCA issued a 3-year suspension to the Alpha Phi Alpha chapter over allegations that pledges were paddled and struck. A student board recommended the suspension, which was equal to a penalty later handed down by the fraternity's national organization.

Police conducted a separate investigation.
