OPELOUSAS, La. (AP) - There's too much light in Schriever, so the St. George Observatory's curator is looking for a new location.
Ken Stage says his main requirement is a guarantee of a dark sky, without street lights and other light sources that can dim the view through a telescope. Stage says that in Schriever, he gets what he calls light pollution from Houma and Thibodaux.
Earlier this month, he took a telescope to Opelousas where he and astronaut Story Musgrave spoke to Opelousas High School students. Musgrave then met with St. Landry Parish officials to discuss the possibility of relocating the observatory to rural Bayou Jack.
Parish President Don Menard says he doesn't know whether an observatory would bring in money for the parish. But he says it might improve quality of life.
