Fed'l officials: 3 Ark. counties disaster areas

Associated Press - April 27, 2009 8:04 PM ET

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - People in three southwest Arkansas counties hit by storms April 9 are eligible for federal assistance after a disaster-area declaration was issued Monday, according to the congressman for the region.

The White House and the Federal Emergency Management Agency declared Polk, Sevier and Miller counties federal disaster areas, U.S. Rep. Mike Ross said in a news release.

Storms hit the area hard on April 9, including a tornado that struck Mena and killed three people.

The disaster declaration triggers the release of federal funds for individual assistance to people who suffered from the storms, the news release said. But no federal assistance to government units affected by the storms has been approved so far.
