One of three Tenaha kids struck by vehicle dead

Posted: Updated:

TENAHA, TX (KSLA) - One of three Tenaha, Texas Independent School District students has died, after being hit by a driver Tuesday morning while waiting for the school bus.

The accident happened around 7:20a.m. on Highway 84 in between Joaquin, Texas and Tenaha, Texas.

7-year-old Ja'Lyric Boykin has reportedly died as a result of the accident. Boykin's brother 5-year-old Nathan Cooks is reportedly at LSU Hospital in critical condition and their aunt 14-year-old Danielle Cooks is in stable condition at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler.

According to Tenaha ISD officials, a white Ford truck was traveling East on the highway and went around two vehicles that were already stopped waiting on the bus to pick up the three children.

Texas Department of Public Safety officers say the truck driver did not see the traffic stopped and that the driver of the truck swerved to miss the stopped vehicles, thus hitting the kids.

Two of the students were taken by ambulance to Center, Texas, and the other student was taken by helicopter to Shreveport, according to school officials.
