Final jury selection slated for ex-soldier's trial

Associated Press - April 17, 2009 4:45 AM ET

PADUCAH, Ky. (AP) - Jury selection is scheduled to wrap up for the trial of a former Fort Campbell soldier charged with killing a family in Iraq and raping a teenage girl who was among those killed.

Former Pfc. Steven D. Green of Midland, Texas, was a member of the 101st Airborne Division when the attack occurred in March 2006. Three other soldiers pleaded guilty at courts-martial to having roles in the attack and a fourth was convicted.

Green has pleaded not guilty. U.S. District Judge Thomas B. Russell scheduled the selection of the 18 jurors who will hear the case for Friday in Paducah.

Green is being tried in civilian court because he was discharged from the Army before being charged. He could face the death penalty.

Opening arguments are set to begin April 27.
