SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - On this week where the sacrifices of first responders has come into sharp focus with the shooting death of a Shreveport Police officer — an ArkLaTex VFW Post is honoring civil servants and outstanding students in Shreveport.

Dozens of guests are expected at this annual banquet and awards ceremony.

The event that gets underway at 6:30 at Savoie's - recognizing first responders in both Shreveport and Caddo Parish.

Among those honored, there's Shreveport Police Sgt. Roy Menefee, Senior Caddo Parish Sheriff's Deputy Marc Herring, Shreveport Firefighter Michael Covert and EMT Scott Silberhauer.

Three Caddo Magnet students placed in the VFW “Voice of Democracy” competition, with Sharon Li in first. Three Saint John Berchman’s students earned top honors in the VFW “Patriot’s Pen” competition, with Kinley Barron taking first.

Richard Crockett, the director of the Overton Brooks VA Medical Center, is the guest speaker.
